Isco: In Seville I told the sporting director that he was the biggest liar I’ve ever met. He grabbed me by the throat and attacked me
Isco is having the worst years of his career. The winner of the Golden Boy poll in 2013 stopped playing after five wonderful years at Real Madrid, and had to take a break for the last six months. And he won’t remember his six-month anabasis at Sevilla fondly either.
Isco is having the worst years of his career. The winner of the Golden Boy poll in 2013 stopped playing after five wonderful years at Real Madrid, and had to take a break for the last six months. And he won’t remember his six-month anabasis at Sevilla fondly either.
In 2013, the world lay at his feet. With Málaga, he reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where he only unluckily crashed out in the setup with Dortmund. He became the winner of the Golden Boy poll and battled Real Madrid and Barcelona for it.
In the end, Isco chose the royal club and it was an excellent choice. He won the Champions League in his very first season, and lifted the trophy over his head three more times in the next four years. In 2016/17 and 2017/18 he was also a regular in the starting line-up and had a key role as a free agent in the diamond formation.
But then his career faded. He stopped playing completely, people started talking about his overweight, when he did play, his performances were poor. Eventually, he lasted until the summer of 2022, when his contract expired and he left for free.
He chose Sevilla as his next destination. It all made sense, there was coach Julen Lopetegui, under whom Isco played the best in his career, an ambitious team playing Champions League.
But then strange things started to happen. “First they called my agent to look for another engagement without talking to me beforehand, so as soon as I found out, I went to talk directly to Monchi (Sevilla’s sporting director). I said to him: ‘Listen, this has come to me, I don’t know what’s going on, I don’t know if you want me, if you don’t want me…. Be honest with me and we’ll sort it out without any problems. I am at your disposal,” Isco tells MARCA newspaper in an interview .
“After that conversation, Monchi kept saying I wanted to leave, which was not true, and he started calling me and my lawyer every day and harassing us to sign the statement. So I went to talk to him again and I said. I want to stay and you say I want to leave, ” the Spanish midfielder added.
Attack
“I told him he was the biggest liar I have ever met in the world of football and he attacked me. He came up to me, grabbed me under the neck and they had to pull us apart. As you can understand, I didn’t want to stay there under any circumstances after that,” explains Isco.
the 31-year-old midfielder decided to end his contract at Sevilla. “I couldn’t be at a club where the sporting director attacks me and nobody calls or apologises. Neither for the aggression, nor for all the lies he spewed,” added the Benalmadena native.
But after a short engagement in Andalusia, he has not found another. He was on the verge of signing a contract at Union Berlin, but they cut his salary twice at the last minute and also told him that they could not put him on the roster for the European Cups.
So Isco did not make any appearances all spring and sought help from a psychologist because, in his own words, he was not in an ideal state mentally and needed to rest. But now he is ready to kick-start his career again and is waiting for offers.
