Daniil Medvedev is outdoing himself this year. He has managed to win a prestigious tennis event on the unpopular clay and now he is getting to grips with the London grass like never before. As a result, he is one of the last four players at Wimbledon. Will the Russian be able to beat even the favoured Alcaraz?

Daniil Medvedev’s previous best on London grass was the eighth round. The Russian surpassed that with a win against Jiri Lehecek. After a five-set battle with American Eubanks, he is one round further.

The last Grand Slams have not gone the way of the world number three. During the last year, Medvedev broke up in the first round of the French Open, went two rounds further at the Australian Open and his best results were the eighth rounds in New York and Paris last year. No glory.

He has never achieved miraculous results at Wimbledon, but now the Russian is looking for a better time. “I want to prove to myself that I can play good tennis here. It’s worked so far, but now I want even more,” he said determinedly in an interview with Eurosport.

How to beat Alcaraz?

You can’t expect an easy opponent in the Wimbledon semi-finals, that Medvedev will be Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard entered the grass part of the season like big water. So far he has won all ten matches played on the traditional surface and he will be the favourite against Medvedev as well.

You have to make a difference against the best opponents. Even if your game is working, it simply may not be enough against opponents like Alcaraz or Djokovic. Considering the surface on which the Russian and the Spaniard will face each other, he sees the aforementioned as the key service.

You try to take one serve away from your opponent and hold your own serve, that’s how it goes on grass,” stresses the nearly two-meter tennis player on the importance of serve. Medvedev believes that he will definitely have opportunities to win in his match against Alcaraz.

Medvedev’s chances

Reflecting on the service statistics, Medvedev’s chances of success are very promising. In the Grand Slam so far, the Russian has scored significantly more aces per game on average than Alcaraz. He also has a higher first serve success rate.

The second most important stroke is the return and in this respect both players are on par. Both have won 40% of balls on serve. Their playing styles are different, but both are united by their current form.

Alcaraz’s confidence, backed by a great run of wins on grass, will have a formidable opponent in the setting of the Russian, who is playing in superb fashion. In a season where anything is possible with him, he has great potential to play a close match with Alcaraz.

In Friday’s other semi-final, Italy’s Sinner will be looking to cast off Djokovic’s Wimbledon spell. That duel is the first on the schedule.
