Red Bull driver Sergio Pérez has responded to speculation about his future with the team following the recent British Grand Prix. The Mexican racer has said that he does not have to worry about losing his race seat despite some poor results. He says he has the full support of team boss Christian Horner.
The Mexican racer has started the season well. He finished second in Bahrain and then won the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. He finished fifth in Melbourne, Australia, but then won in Azerbaijan, where he scored 33 points.
He subsequently finished second in Miami, but the last three races have put the man nicknamed “Checo” under pressure. He failed to score a point in Monaco, and his performance in Spain and Canada also dropped when he finished fourth and sixth.
In the Austrian Grand Prix, he returned to the podium with a third place. However, at Silverstone, Pérez suffered another major qualifying disappointment, setting the 16th fastest time due to a tyre error.
However, he then managed to move up nine places in the race after starting from 15th position and finished the British Grand Prix in sixth place.
In the drivers’ championship, Pérez is still in second place with 156 points, 19 points clear of third-placed Fernando Alonso. As a result, talk has recently started to turn to whether he still has the Red Bull and who he could possibly be replaced by.
Pérez, however, seems to have the full backing of the Austrian stable, as Autosport reports. Red Bull also has no plans to commit its former driver Daniel Ricciardo to the team.
Pérez is now in talks to join Red Bull…
“To be honest, I don’t really care. I’ve been in Formula 1 for 13 years and I’ve seen it all. I’m not worried about any of that, I’m just focused on having a good season and continuing to enjoy it,” Pérez told the media after the British GP, including Racing News 365.
“I have the full support of Helmut and Christian, the whole team is fully behind me. They know what I can do, they know my potential and they are fully behind me,” he added.
