Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the arrival of Mason Mount to Manchester United. The Chelsea product has played over 100 games for the Blues in the Premier League, and will look to repair his reputation at United after a disappointing season. What role will Erik ten Hag put him in at Manchester United?

Many were surprised when Mount’s name became associated with United. The English midfielder is a Chelsea offspring and a fan favourite. At the London club, he made his way into the starting line-up after highly successful loan spells in the Netherlands and the English second division.

However, things took off quickly and the clubs agreed on a £60 million deal, with the player himself also in favour of the transfer. Everything culminated in the confirmation of the famous Italian journalist Romano, who is known for his catchphrase “Here we go!”.

Last season, Mount had a bit of a ride with the failed performances of Chelsea, who finished the season in the final 12th place with just 44 points. The England international scored only three goals and four assists across all competitions for the season.

Thus, in Manchester, he will want to forget last season and remind why even England national team coach Southgate gives him confidence. But where could he fit into the Dutch pilot’s system?

Eight

The first possibility is that the Blues offspring will replace the ageing Eriksen in the number eight position. Mount himself admits that the so-called box-to-box midfielder suits him best as a position. He has worked in that position on loan at Derby County, and also in his first season under Frank Lampard at Chelsea.

Left winger

Mount can play here too and put in quality performances. One of the most famous matches is the Champions League final against Manchester City, where Mount set up the only goal of the match for Havertz.

On the other hand, United have Marcus Rashford in that position, for whom the left winger is more suited than a top striker. This option therefore seems the less likely one.

Offensive midfielder

Probably the most likely option. Although the English midfielder likes to be on the ball a lot, that’s just what Bruno Fernandes already does for the Red Devils, who also goes to the back lines to help with the midfield.

So the logical option is to move Mount up to the number ten position. There he would have plenty of space to create play up front, and if United get a quality striker, Mount himself would benefit.

Where in United’s lineup Mount will settle is still a question. The clubs are expected to officially announce the transfer in the next few days and Red Devils fans are already looking forward to welcoming the new signing to Old Trafford.
