The draw for Wimbledon 2023: Andy Murray knows who he will face in the first round

Britain’s Andy Murray was perhaps a little more eagerly awaiting the Wimbledon draw than other tennis players. In recent weeks he came close to breaking through to the top seeds, but in the end he didn’t make it into the elite 32 tennis players. His plan to advance to the second week of the London Grand Slam is thus very much dependent on the lottery draw. Who will he face in the first round and what are his potential opponents for the next battles?

The British tennis player knows that he has to be ready for all opponents. However, it is definitely not optimal to face an elite player in the first round. Andy Murray himself expressed himself in this spirit.

On the other hand, Murray was in the position of Black Peter when the draw for Wimbledon 2023 was made. Therefore, even if he is not among the top 32 players in terms of rankings, he may well be among the best. After all, he managed to win Wimbledon twice.

Murray’s form this year is on the up and he has won two preliminary Challengers on grass. The only thing that went wrong for the Glasgow native in the run-up to the third Grand Slam of the season was the dress rehearsal at Queen’s Club. There he finished in the first round at the hands of the top-seeded Australian De Minaur.

How did the draw go?

Murray will play his compatriot Ryan Peniston in the first round. He is now only ranked third in the ATP rankings. He will be attending Wimbledon on a wild card.

His form in recent weeks is nowhere near Murray’s. In the challengers that his more famous compatriot dominated, Peniston said goodbye in the second round. Murray has not yet met his opponent more than eight years his junior.

A very interesting fight is in the air in the next round. If he advances, Murray could meet the tournament’s top five Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round. A year ago on the Stuttgart grass, the Briton managed to win their duel. A year earlier, it was Tsitsipas who won the US Open.

If we are optimistic from Murray’s point of view and look even further down the tournament’s ladder, we can mention a potential duel with American Shelton in the third round.

In the even more distant future is a theoretical eighth-round match against Sebastian Korda. But we’re probably getting too far ahead of ourselves. Wimbledon starts on July 3 and tennis fans have a lot to look forward to, and not just thanks to Murray.
