Real Madrid officially announced Modric’s contract extension on their club website on Monday afternoon.
Much has been written about the 37-year-old Croatian international in the last few weeks, especially regarding his potential transfer to a club in the Saudi Arabian top flight.
Modric, meanwhile, denied any such speculation three months ago and made it clear that he wants to stay at Real Madrid.
He made the statement at a press conference ahead of the Croatians’ first Euro qualifying match.
“I stand by what I said. I have said it many times and I am tired of it. But my wish is known and I believe it will be. I want to stay at Real Madrid. The latter is speculation by the writing (journalists) that I cannot refute. I know they have to write something, but I hope to stay at Real Madrid,” Modric said at the time, whose words were quoted by Croatian daily Dnevnik.
Now, however, official confirmation has finally come for Real Madrid fans. ” Real Madrid and Luka Modric have agreed to extend the footballer’s contract until 30 June 2024,” reads the official statement.
Modric at Real Madrid
The Zadar native transferred to Real at the end of August 2012, specifically from Tottenham for €35 million. During that time, he played 488 games for the White Ballet, scoring 37 goals and assisting 77 others.
Above all, he has been the central figure in Real’s successful modern era – five Champions League championships, three league titles and two Copa del Rey victories. These are already numbers that simply speak for themselves.
