The Qatari emir is offering the Glazer family £4.5 billion. But there’s a catch! Either Manchester United or PSG could be in the Champions League. Why?

Tameem bin Hamad Al Thani, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee, has entered the fray for Manchester United. The 4th Emir of Qatar, who is 42, apparently fell definitively in love with football while hosting the World Cup late last year.

According to The Guardian, the ruler of the Qatari emirate is offering £4.5 billion for the Manchester outfit, which is, however, £1.5 billion less than the Glazer family imagines.

However, that’s not the only catch to this potential Manchester United purchase. Indeed, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has owned Parisian club PSG since 2011, through Qatar Sports Investment. UEFA does not allow two teams with the same owner to meet in the same competition.

However, according to the information available, it is being examined how the whole purchase could be carried out in a way that complies with the rules. There is no doubt, therefore, that if the Qatari Emir decides to take this step, he will find a way.

Journalist Jamie Jackson, who came up with the news, rightly points out that there should probably be some sort of intervention from the Premier League or UEFA. We’ve already seen one much-criticised takeover not long ago, namely Newcastle United.

Meanwhile, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is a lifelong Red Devils fan , has previously expressed interest in Manchester United. However, negotiations have not made much progress so far, with the Glazer family only willing to sell the club if someone is willing to put down the required amount.

After much fan unrest in Manchester, the club has been doing well so far, as they are currently third in the Premier League. In addition, they have an interesting Europa League clash with Barcelona next week.

In addition, the Red Devils are also fighting in the FA Cup, where they will face West Ham in the 5th round, and in the EFL Cup, where they will face Newcastle in the final on 26 February.
