Football site talkSPORT came forward on Thursday morning with the claim, which was made by PSV Eindhoven coach Ruud van Nistelrooy himself. He has in fact revealed details of Gakpe’s transfer to Liverpool.
According to the 46-year-old coach, the young Dutch talent made a big mistake when deciding which club to move to.
Van Nistelrooy also revealed that Gakpo ignored his advice regarding the transfer, reportedly choosing Liverpool “ten times smaller” in the January transfer window.
I wanted him to choose United. Liverpool is ten times smaller
“For Gakpo, Manchester United was his dream transfer. He had been in contact with Ten Hag since last August. I also wanted him to join United – not just because it’s my former club and I love it,” Van Nistelrooy told talkSPORT.
“(I wanted it) also because they are better than Liverpool and offer their players much more potential. But United didn’t make an offer in January so I advised him to wait until the summer,” the PSV coach explained.
“Something happened and he rejected my advice and listened to Van Dijk, who lured him to his team. He told me he wanted to move abroad in January. The fact is that Liverpool are ten times smaller than Manchester United in all departments,” he added.
Van Nistelrooy further added that he is happy and lucky to have played for the two biggest clubs in the world – Manchester United and Real Madrid. He also thinks that Gakpo would have scored goals for the former a long time ago.
The fact remains that Gakpo is not currently having the best time at Liverpool. The Dutch international has made six appearances for the Reds so far and hasn’t scored a single goal. It should be added, not only Gakpo is out of form, but also the whole team.
Liverpool are currently in tenth place in the Premier League table with 29 points. In the new calendar year, in terms of league matches, they have recorded three defeats. 1: 3 to Brentford, 0: 3 to Brighton and 0: 3 to Wolverhampton.
The Reds have recorded only one point (for a goalless draw with Chelsea), while they also crashed out of the FA Cup when they lost to Brighton.
