VAR has been the subject of heated debate since its introduction. Innovations are constantly being introduced to make the video referee more efficient and, above all, to improve the view of the technology in the eyes of the spectators themselves.
One of the reasons why VAR can be perceived negatively is the fact that the spectator in the stadium often has no idea what situation is being examined and what subsequently led to the on-field referee resolving the issue in that way.
One such issue in which there is often a great deal of confusion is the playing of hands in the whitewash. This rule is constantly changing and even a viewer at the television screen, who has the opportunity to watch the situation from repeated shots, would welcome an explanation.
Two days ago, for the first time ever, the referee on the pitch explained his decisions directly to the spectators.
It happened in the Club World Cup match between Al Ahly and Auckland City. The Egyptian club was leading 3-0 when an attacking player was fouled on the edge of the large white space. The video assistant had to decide whether it was an offside tackle.
The Chinese referee first viewed the situation on a monitor and then communicated the decision to the forty-seven thousand spectators in the stadium.
“The decision is a free kick. Player number 3 – avoiding a goal scoring opportunity,” he said and then showed the defending player a red card.
The introduction of this innovation is being tested at the ongoing championship and should become the rule in all competitions where VAR is used in the future.
In the foreseeable future, referees will announce their decisions, for example at the Women’s World Cup and the Under-20 World Cup.
