If any football team is enjoying the start of the new year, it is definitely Villarreal. Last year’s Champions League semi-finalist is winning one game after another, and on Monday they can finish in the top 4 of La Liga on points.

Villarreal are in great form after the Qatar break. It has taken 13 points from the last five rounds and consolidated its place in the TOP 5 of the table. They are just three points behind fourth place with one game to play.

Vallecano, on the other hand, has lost two of its last three games, but can still be at ease. With 26 points, it is in ninth place, with a comfortable nine-point lead on the relegation zone. On the other hand, only three points away from the Top 7.

Villarreal’s key figures

The home side rely on the goals of Álex Baena, the Spanish talent and U21 international has netted ten goals and assisted four times. Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze made eight saves and assisted on seven goals.

Vallecano’s key figures

Even the visitors are pulled by the national under-21 team, with striker Sergio Camello scoring five goals and assisting three times. The same record is boasted by his fellow forward, Spanish low centre of gravity right winger Isi Palazón.

The Yellow Submarine relies on a solid defense. With 13 goals conceded, it has it second best after the unbeatable Barcelona, while more than one goal has been conceded in only one of their last nine competitive matches.

Vallecano, on the other hand, are not so good defensively. With 22 goals scored, it has the worst record of the teams in the first half of the table, having received more than one goal in four out of five games since the World Cup in Qatar.

Considering Villarreal’s excellent form, which included a win over the last Champions League winner Real Madrid in January, and the different frame of mind of the two defences, I think they can handle the home game and win.
