The end of a great era. Glover Teixeira has decided to call it a career at the age of 43. He has an impressive and wonderful story behind him, he has fought many memorable battles, he was the second oldest champion in UFC history.
But he lost his last two fights of his career. In the summer of 2022, he was no match for Jiri Prochazka, who stole the title from him literally in the last seconds of the fifth round. On Sunday, he was destroyed by Jamahal Hill in an unbelievable brawl.
It is Hill who is the new champion and the Brazilian admitted in his assessment of the fight that the American puncher surprised him with his tremendous speed. It was this that helped Hill get many of his shots through and despite Teixeira’s incredible toughness, you could tell that these were crazy bombs.
“The truth is that I’m so tough that I’m actually hurting myself and paying the price. It’s obvious that I’m just not up to this level anymore, so now I’m going to focus on training Alex Pereira and the other fighters in our gym,” Teixeira expressed after the fight.
Pereira will head to welterweight
By ending his career, the Brazilian might have made some rivals happy, as he wouldn’t have been an easy opponent for anyone. But even the biggest stars in the welterweight division warned of a threat yet to come.
Specifically, he was referring to the aforementioned Alex Pereira. “Alex will hold the title for a very long time. Plus, he’ll have to move up to welterweight at some point,” Teixeira admitted.
Pereira is currently the middleweight champion. He holds a 7-1 record in his MMA career, winning six fights by KO/TKO and only once on points. His only loss came in 2015 in his first MMA fight.
Most recently, he was able to end the phenomenal dominance of Israel Adesanya, whom he defeated for the third time in his career. Before stealing his belt in the UFC, he managed to overpower him in the Glory organization under K1 rules.
The fact is that Pereira is big and strong for a middleweight. He was huge against Adesanya. Moving up to welterweight would make sense. Plus, many people want the Brazilian to avenge Teixeira against both Prochazka and Hill.
