The UFC’s welterweight division has a new champion

When he brought the UFC championship belt to the Czech Republic last year, he almost became a national hero. Jiri Prochazka defeated UFC veteran Glover Teixeira with just 28 seconds left in the fight, and their five-round war was named fight of the year by the organization.

A spectacular title fight rematch was supposed to come late last year, however Procházka announced a serious shoulder injury that required surgery.

The Czech fighter then decided to vacate his title. The UFC thus staged a new title fight, with Jamahal Hill defeating the Brazilian Teixeira during this weekend’s UFC 283. He retired after losing the fight in front of his home crowd.

The agile Hill showed sheer dominance in the bout and showed that he will definitely be a big deal in the division. He then confirmed his pre-match promise at the post-tournament press conference that the Moravian Samurai would be the opponent in his first title defence.

But it all depends on the health of the Czech fighter and his return to the cage. Procházka revealed more information on the show of the world famous journalist Ariel Helwani, where he also commented on the weekend’s fight and the situation in the division.

“I was a little surprised by Glover’s performance, his energy, he seemed a little slow to me,” Prochazka said on The MMA Hour about the UFC 283 main event. “And of course an amazing performance by Jamahal, everything he did that night just clicked.”

“I’m a little disappointed that Glover didn’t make it in front of his home crowd, but it’s a great move for the welterweight division. Jamahal is a young dangerous guy and it’s great to have someone like him with the title, it’s a challenge for me. He can’t wait to train,” he acknowledged the qualities of the new champion.

But he couldn’t help but remind the young knockout artist of his pre-fight words. “He talked about the power of his punches. He said if he hits Glover, it’s over, but Glover showed he’s not so hot with that power,” he said.

When can fans expect the Moravian samurai to return?

But for now, he is still in rehab and has revealed his plans for the coming weeks. “So far everything is going according to plan. Next week I’ll fly to Las Vegas to continue my rehabilitation. I’m not just going there to fix my shoulder, I’m going to fix my whole body, and I’m looking forward to working with some of the best in the business.”

“I think I could be back in July or August, six to seven months, but I don’t want to be back as soon as I can, just to fight. I want to make sure my body is working at two hundred percent,” he doesn’t want to rush anything.

“It’s up to him if he wants to wait for me. I’ll just be happy, I’m already training my guns on him. But like I said, I want the division to move, there are a lot of great guys, Ankalaev, Blachowicz, Rakic is coming back, there’s talk of Smith. But I’ll be happy if he waits for me, I just need some time,” he concluded.
