Lazio didn’t start the new year well, going down 1: 2 at Lecce. They can’t afford another loss as the table is really even. From fifth place, the team from the capital has a two-point lead over seventh-placed Atalanta.
Empoli gained a valuable point at Udine this week, following up their triumph over Sassuolo the week before Christmas. They jumped up to 13th place and now have a comfortable nine-point lead on the relegation zone.
Lazio’s key figures
Lazio rely on Ciro Immobile, the Italian international striker and team captain has scored eight times and assisted three times. The dashing Brazilian winger Felipe Anderson has scored four goals and assisted on four others.
Key figures of Empoli
The visitors’ top scorer is 19-year-old Italian offensive midfielder Tommaso Baldanzi, he has scored three times so far. Captain and Baldanzi’s midfield colleague Filippo Bandinelli has scored twice so far.
Lazio are no longer the kind of team that simply outshoots their opponents. It relies on solid defending, conceding only 13 goals, only Juventus are better. They’ve been held to zero at home in three of their last six games.
Plus, Empoli’s not burning. With only 13 goals scored, it has the third worst league offense after Cremonese and Sampdoria Genoa, while scoring more than once in only one of the last four games.
Considering Lazio’s home strength, the long-term form of its defensive unit and Empoli’s struggling attack, which is dependent on the 19-year-old’s talent, I think the Romans will win.
