He won the World Cup in Qatar, but he doesn’t have a place in Manchester United’s squad. Harry Maguire is addressing his future in the winter transfer window, with two Premier League teams interested.
Harry Maguire has started just 13 games this season across all competitions. He has played 25 per cent of the possible game time on the league scene, with Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelöf taking priority.
Despite the low workload, Maguire was not missing from Gareth Southgate’s nomination for the World Cup in Qatar, even featuring in the starting line-up. And he didn’t do badly, according to English experts he was Albion’s best defender.
That’s why, according to the British media, two Premier League clubs – Newcastle and Aston Villa – are interested in him. On Saturday Maguire had dinner with his agent in Birmingham, near the Villans training centre.
Aston Villa, despite a nominally packed roster, failed to make the first third of the season. Steven Gerrard failed to realise the potential of the squad and the club’s management ran out of patience in October.
Not to mention, the seventh most expensive squad in the competition was close to relegation. And under Gerrard, it was the defence that troubled the Villans. Tyrone Mings, who occasionally plays for the England national team, was terrible, as was Ezri Konsa.
They look better under Unaeus Emery, but it’s still not 100%. The Spanish coach still has the experienced Jan Bednarek and Calum Chambers at his disposal.
But they don’t get many starts, and when they got their chance in the FA Cup on Sunday, they cashed in twice and signed off to a disgraceful end with quarter-league Stevenage.
