It was a very ambitious project to popularise football in China and bring in more money. But instead came the collapse of big sponsors and the flight of almost all the stars from the league. But there are still a few more or less well-known names playing. One of those who hasn’t left China is Brazilian Oscar.

It looked like Oscar would finally leave the Chinese Super League and head to Europe or his native Brazil. There was a lot of interest in him. The former Chelsea midfielder joined Shanghai Port in 2017.

But the move to Brazil didn’t happen. At least for now. The now 31-year-old Oscar suddenly found himself in the starting line-up for Shanghai in a cup match.

And it was a comeback like thunder. The Brazilian scored one goal and assisted one. He was also named star of the match. But the question is what’s next for him. The Chinese league season recently ended.

The Brazilian’s royal salary in Shanghai is over £500,000 a week. But the question is how long will the Chinese club be able to pay such a salary.

Chinese clubs are experiencing lean years, with all the big stars leaving and a significant outflow of funds. As a result, they have to rely solely on domestic players who do not add much to the quality of the league.

But Flamengo have not given up the fight for the former national team player, and in the coming weeks we will see what Oscar’s future holds.
