Teixeira on Procházka: If I hadn’t let him finish me, I would have been a champion. Nobody owns the belt
Jiří Procházek was not lucky and could not defend his welterweight title. Due to his absence, Glover Teixeira, who, thanks to a combination of circumstances, can win the belt in January, was also absent from the tournament. Why, in his own words, does he not need to beat Prochazka to be the best in the world?

Glover Teixeira went into his fight with Jiri Prochazka as the reigning welterweight champion. The Brazilian veteran was close to winning, but then came the turning point.
Procházka came back from the dead and managed to choke out his opponent with less than half a minute to go, making him the new champion.
It was a historic achievement for the Czech combat sports scene, Procházka was suddenly appearing even in places where he had not been mentioned much in the past.
After the fight he promised Teixeira a rematch, probably because he was close to losing and wanted to show that he had the championship belt by right. Eventually all parties came to an agreement and the fight was scheduled for December.
However, Prochazka was injured and did not make the tournament. Teixeira didn’t wrestle either, with Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev getting the title shot instead.
The not very attractive match ended in a draw, so it will be Teixeira who will fight for the title in January. His opponent will be Jamahal Hill, but some fans are wondering if the Brazilian will take the title as his rightful one, when it should have belonged to someone else.
“Walk won the fight with 28 seconds left. If I hadn’t let him stop me, I would have been champion. I was winning. It’s not like he beat me up the whole fight, I lost, and now I’m going to recapture the title.
I’m going for the belt. Nobody owns it. I’m gonna show that I’m the best in the world. If Prochazka gets healthy by the end of the year, I don’t know if he’ll make it, we’ll fight again. But I’m not gonna make any plans.
Like I said, I’m only going to make plans for the next six weeks and I’m going to train f**king hard,” said Teixeira, who will be the favorite in the fight.
