Fighting for the French Open. Quartet of Czech tennis players starts qualification for Grand Slam tournament.
The turn of May and June is reserved in the tennis world for the French Open. The second Grand Slam of the season is hosted by Paris and the Musketeers’ Cup is traditionally contested by the world’s top players. Four Czech tennis players would also like to make it through the qualifying rounds to the main competition.

Dalibor Svrcina
The native of Ostrava could play in the main event of the French Open for the first time in his life. Last year at the Paris Grand Slam he failed in the opening round of qualifying. This year he overcame this obstacle. The 20-year old Czech player got past the Swiss Laendri, although he lost both sets 1:3.
The Swiss was literally drowning in errors during Monday’s match, recording over 40 in two sets. Dalibor Svrcina made far fewer errors, had a much better first serve and won twice 6: 4.
In the second qualifying match he will play another Swiss Dominic Stricker, who is the 116th player in the rankings. From the Czech tennis player’s point of view, it will probably be a much tougher test, as he has lost both of his matches against Stricker so far.
Vít Kopřiva
The 25-year-old tennis player from Bílovec has not yet played the main competition at the Paris Grand Slam. In Monday’s qualifying he faced Moldova’s Albot. The favourite of the match was the 33-year-old opponent of the Czech tennis player, who has already been twice in the second round at Roland Garros.
The first set was full of service losses. At 5::4 Kopriva missed two set points and the momentum of the match was set. Kopřiva didn’t win a game in the match and he says goodbye to the French Open qualification in the first round.
Other Czech tennis players
Tomas Machac will be the big favourite in his match. The tennis player, whose maximum is the first round here in 2020, will face the home tennis player Lucas Pouille. He has undergone a big loss of form after injury-related problems. Now he’s trying to bounce back, so far with intermittent success in challengers.
The Czech tennis player caught the attention of the tennis public when he defeated Novak Djokovic in the first round of a tournament in Dubai. The Serbian tennis player decided his victory then only in the tiebreak of the third set. He praised Macháč then. According to him, the Czech did not play like a player in the second hundred of the ATP rankings. Let’s see if the twenty-two-year-old Macháč will attack the elite hundred right here at Roland Garros.
On Tuesday, the opening round of qualifying awaits two more representatives of Czech tennis. Zdenek Kolar will try to start defending his excellent result last year against the home team Atman.
The 26-year-old Czech won four duels in Paris last year to reach the second round, where he lost to Greece’s Tsitsipas after a very good performance. He lost to the current world number five last year after 3::6, 6::7, 7::6, 6::7 sets.
The main competition at Roland Garros will begin on Sunday, May 28. We present the biggest favourites one by one on the Ruik website. So far, last year’s semifinalist Alexander Zverev and two-time quarterfinalist Andrey Rublyov have been given space here.
