Formula One qualifying for Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix got underway on Saturday afternoon, and the opening stages of the race already produced a pretty heavy crash.
Red Bull driver Sergio Pérez failed to negotiate the first corner and broke his car. In particular, the Mexican driver damaged the left rear suspension and the left sidewall of his car was also damaged.
You can see the whole moment in the video below. After just a few minutes, the directorate resorted to red flags and a suspension of qualifying.
Of course, Pérez did not add any more time in the first part of qualifying due to the significant damage to his monopost.
And that’s a really big problem in Monaco, since on this city circuit, even taking into account the size of the current cars, there won’t be much overtaking on a classic Sunday.
The thirty-three-year-old will therefore start the Monaco Grand Prix from the very tail of the grid.
Along with him, Zhou Kuan-yu, Nico Hülkenberg, Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant also failed to qualify from Q1.
At the last moment, Lewis Hamilton, who was even in the non-advancing positions for a while, set a Q2 qualifying time. Everything is now being prepared for the start of the second segment of Saturday’s action.
