Ben Shelton is a young American man in his early twenties. But he is already one of the world’s top players on the ATP circuit. At the prestigious tournament in Madrid, he produced a magnificent stroke that will definitely be one of the best of the 2023 calendar year.
Ben Shelton had a great end to 2022. The American managed to dominate tournaments in Charlottesville, Knoxville and Champaign. He was undefeated in fifteen duels in a row.
The 20-year-old continued his great performance in January. At the Australian Open, he reached the quarterfinals, where he lost to his compatriot Paul. He did, however, beat Jarry, Popyrin and Wolf.
Thanks to this success, Shelton is also ranked 38th in the current edition of the ATP rankings. He is even ranked 20th in the ATP Race, which guarantees the top eight players participation in the Tournament of Champions.
However, he has not yet made the transition from hard to clay to his liking. He has won only two duels in Estoril, Monte Carlo and Barcelona. He was unable to beat Thiem, Dimitrov and Ruud.
So he definitely didn’t arrive at the ATP Masters in Madrid in the best of moods. In the first round he had a bye, in the second round he met Struff, the lucky loser from the qualification. The German won the match after sets 4::6, 7::6 and 7::5.
But the American played the best shot of the match in the second game of the first set. Despite the fact that he had his back to his opponent, he made a beautiful line drive that Struff had no answer to. Take a look for yourself.
Struff will take on Lajovic in the 16th final of the tournament. The Serbian hasn’t lost seven matches in a row and is putting in a great performance at the moment. The Serbian tennis player will be the favourite to advance.
