It was February 2021 when Barbora Strýcová made her last appearance on court. Then at the Australian Open in doubles together with Su-Wei Hsieh from Taiwan. A month later, she announced her pregnancy and we haven’t seen her since. But this year, she’s back on the court and talking about a farewell season.
The Pilsen native still plans to return to the courts at almost 37 years old. The last time fans could see her was at the Australian Open in 2021, however, a month after dropping out of the tournament she announced she was pregnant and her son is now a year and a half old.
Moreover, at that time, the world was in the grip of a coronavirus pandemic and the stands at tournaments were empty. “I was finishing in the heaviest covid and also because I was pregnant. I guess I needed to end my career in my own way, not by some forced circumstances,” she was quoted by TenisPortal.cz.
Now it is time for her to come back for a while and combine her parental duties with her tennis ones. She will enter the season with a tournament in Madrid, followed by Rome. He wants to play both singles and doubles. And he’ll be playing with his Taiwanese partner again.
Su-Wei Hsieh has been taking a year’s break and will come to Prague to get used to each other again. She herself has been in training since the beginning of this year and is extremely looking forward to the matches.
And what are her specific plans? She will definitely skip Roland Garros, but she wants to play Wimbledon and optimally the US Open. Overall, she would like to play several tournaments on grass and wants to play in Prague as well as Ostrava.
“I had a frozen ranking, which means one year in case of injury, and if there is a pregnancy, there is a possibility to use it for two years. In my case it was the special ranking of 39th place in singles and 4th place in doubles. I took the Wimbledon Grand Slams and the US Open,” she explained the complexities of getting a card for tournaments.
She doesn’t give much chance that she should play next year. On the contrary. She wants to play in the aforementioned tournaments once more and intends to prepare as best as she can. But she doesn’t want to play another season. She just wants to close her career for herself.
