Formula 2 has started its new season in full swing. The Bahrain circuit was also the venue for the first competitive appearance of the Czech representative Roman Stanek, but he will want to forget the first weekend quickly. He is leaving without a point and he has also had a lot of bad luck.
The race weekend did not start badly for the Czech representative. In a not very fast Trident monopost he managed to take an excellent ninth place in qualifying. The proof of the quality of the result was the position of his teammate.
Frenchman Clément Novalak finished last. Ninth position had one more bonus for Stanek. In the sprint race, the top ten from the qualifying race turned over on the grid, so the Czech was waiting for a front row start.
Unfortunately, Staňek had some complications with the brakes during the sprint, which caused the 19-year-old pilot from Valašské Meziříčí to fall down the order.
After five laps Staněk was only ninth. For a while he climbed back up the standings and attacked the points positions. However, on the last lap, Stanek fell further and ended up thirteenth.
In the main race, the young local rider made a great start. After the first few metres he moved up to sixth place and pushed further ahead. But his journey forward was ended by Victor Martins in turn four.
The French rider avoided a corner in front of him and shot down the Czech hope with a left-handed manoeuvre. After some time in the air, Stanek encountered a hard impact on the track and damaged his monoposto.
The Czech pilot’s weekend ended prematurely. His pace, however, is definitely a promise for the rest of the season. In just a fortnight’s time, the 19-year-old talent will get his chance to race in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Théo Pourchaire is leading the championship after the first two races of the season, having won the main race along with pole position. Second place is held by the surprise of the weekend, Ralph Boschung. The Swiss took his first Formula 2 triumph by winning the sprint race and then finished second in the main race.
