In the eight finals we saw five tennis players, with only two advancing. First up was Karolina Pliskova, who took on world number seven Maria Sakkari.
It was a close match, but after a three-set battle, the Greek celebrated her advancement. Even the second match did not go the way Czech tennis fans dreamed it would.
Barbora Krejčíková had against her the world number two Aryna Sabalenka, with whom she played one set and after losing 1::2 she unfortunately says goodbye to the tournament.
In the next match we saw a Czech duel. Markéta Vondroušová took on Karolina Muchová and we got a surprise.
The outsider Muchová won the first set, fell in the second set in a tiebreak and in the third set she defeated her younger opponent 6:4, which made her a top eight player. There she can look forward to Elena Rybakina.
Petra Kvitova was the last one to go, but the world number three Jessica Pegula was waiting for her. But the Czech dominated the more than two-hour battle.
She won the first set 6::2, then lost 3::6 and won the final set in a tiebreak 7::6 (13::11). She will play for the semifinals against the winner of her national teammate, Sakkari.
