Krejcikova and Siniakova advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, while other Czech representatives in doubles dropped out

Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova took another step towards defending last year’s triumph at the Australian Open on Monday. Unlike them, the other purely Czech doubles pair Miriam Kolodziejová, Markéta Vondroušová did not make it to the quarterfinal stage of the tournament. Jiří Lehečka, whose teammate was Slovak Alex Molčan, also lost in the eighth round.

The top-seeded duo of Krejcikova, Siniakova confirmed their role as the favourite duo by defeating Oxana Kalashnikova of Georgia and Alycia Parks of the USA. Moreover, the Czechs didn’t stay on the court too long.

They dominated the hour-long match after 6:0 and 6:2 sets. They can now prepare for their next duel. They will play the winners of the match Tereza Mihalikova, Aljaksandra Sasnovic – Desirae Krawczyk, Demi Schuurs. This semi-final should be played early Tuesday morning CET.

Kolodziej and Vondrousova did not add another win after a big turnaround in the last round in which they turned away nine match points. This time there was no big drama.

The Ukrainian-Romanian pair Marta Kostyukova, Elena Gabriela Ruseova defeated the Czech tennis players in two sets. After almost an hour and a half, the opponents enjoyed the final result 6::3 and 6::4.

Lehečka and Molčan faced Frenchmen Jérémy Chardy and Fabrice Martin in the eight-finals. The opening set culminated in a tie-break which ended in a clear 7:2 win for the representatives of the Gallic Cock country.

At the beginning of the second act, the Czech-Slovak pair quickly took the serve, to which their opponents failed to react. Chardy and Martin, on the other hand, took advantage of the first match point, which was also a break point, and won the set 6:3.

Jiří Lehečka can now concentrate purely on the singles competition. His quarter-final against world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas is scheduled for Tuesday night session. The twenty-one-year-old Czech should be able to play the Greek favourite in Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday morning.
