Invincible. Krejcikova and Siniakova are Australian Open champions again!
Czech-Moravian cooperation is still working. World No.1 Barbora Krejčíková and Katerina Siniakova successfully defended last year’s triumph in Melbourne and after Sunday’s 6:4 and 6:3 win over Japan’s Aoyama and Shibahara, the pair claimed their seventh Grand Slam title.
Czech-Moravian cooperation is still working. World No.1 Barbora Krejčíková and Katerina Siniakova successfully defended their triumph from Melbourne last year and after Sunday’s 6:4 and 6:3 win over Japan’s Aoyama and Shibahara, the duo claimed their seventh Grand Slam title.
This year’s Australian Open was more than successful for our colours. In the men’s singles, the talented Jiri Lehecka made it to the quarterfinals, while in the women’s singles the Czech Republic had three representatives in the eight-final stage. However, neither of these successes is the most significant.
Neither of them has been doing too well in singles lately, but Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova have been able to fix their taste in doubles. Both of these players know each other very well. In fact, they managed to win two U18 Grand Slams together in their junior years.
At the moment they have seven senior grand slams to their credit and by no means have they had the last word.
The journey to defend last year’s title hasn’t started very convincingly. In fact, immediately in the first round the tournament leaders had to fight in three sets. After the initial nervousness subsided, everything went like clockwork. Before the final, they allowed their opponents to gain five games at most, so they were considered the clear favourites.
Their final opponents were the surprise finalists from Japan. Shuko Aoyama and Eno Shibahara were the 10th seeds to reach their first Grand Slam final. Perhaps it was this inexperience that proved fatal for the Asian pair.
The Czech-Moravian pair got a quick break early in the match and took the lead. The Japanese had two opportunities to level the score, but in the end they failed and Krejčíková and Siniakova took the opening set 6:4.
At the beginning of the second set, as if the top ten seeds had not learned their lesson, there was again an immediate loss of serve. Eventually, at 1::2, they managed to level the unfavourable situation and even take the lead.
The Czechs then showed their phase again and after winning four games in a row, they managed to take the second set. The bottom line is that after ninety minutes and 6::4, 6::3 the world leaders could start to enjoy another success.
For Barbora Krejcikova and Kateryna Siniakova, this year’s Australian Open became the first Grand Slam that they were able to successfully defend. At the same time, the fantastic duo did not find any unbeatens for the fourth consecutive Big Four tournament and the question is how many more titles these two ladies can win together.
