After sixteen races of the season, Formula 1 has almost an old champion. In Singapore, defending champion Max Verstappen can follow in the footsteps of big names such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton, who have managed to defend the trophy for the world champion of the queen of motorsport in their careers.
There are more ways in which the Dutchman can become champion. With six races left in the season and a sprint in Brazil, 164 points are in play. Lewis Hamilton lost his theoretical chance of the title after the VC of Italy, the first time that has happened to him since 2013.
At the moment, Charles Leclerc, Sergio Pérez, George Russell and Carlos Sainz still have a theoretical shot at the title. But all of them can’t be too happy about this year’s hopes anymore. There are 116 points between first Verstappen and second Leclerc. In other words, even if the Dutchman didn’t drive the next four races, he would still be at the top of the championship.
the 24-year-old leader currently has 335 points. By comparison, last year the Red Bull driver won the title with 395.5 points. Unlike last year’s controversial final, this year’s race in Abu Dhabi is likely to be “only” for second place.
Now back to this year’s race in Singapore. If Verstappen wins, Leclerc could finish as low as eighth, assuming the Red Bull driver doesn’t set the fastest lap of the race. If the bonus point is awarded to the current world champion, his Monaco rival would have to finish a worst seventh.
In the event of a Verstappen triumph, only Pérez can get in on the action. The other drivers would have already definitely knocked Russell and Sainz out of the game. But it should be added that both drivers still have time to win the championship.
Formula One returns to the East Asian continent after a long hiatus caused by the coronavirus. And the championship could be decided at the Singapore city circuit, with six grand prix and one sprint now to go.
