Untaped! The Spa-Francorchamps circuit will remain on the Formula 1 calendar next season
Fans can breathe a sigh of relief for at least one more year. One of the formula racing community’s favourite tracks, Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps, officially remains on the motorsport queen’s calendar for next year. The departure of one of F1’s most traditional race venues has thus been delayed by a season.
The seven-kilometre circuit, which is located in the picturesque surroundings of the Ardennes forests and hills, has not had a secure place on the F1 calendar in recent times. Interest in Formula 1 is steadily increasing, and this is causing more and more interest from different countries to host F1 races.
Consider the return of the Chinese and Qatar Grand Prix and the confirmation of Las Vegas as the third American event. All of this meant that the Belgian Grand Prix at the iconic circuit could end its run after this season.
However, just before the start of this year’s Belgian Grand Prix, Formula 1 confirmed that Spa would not be absent next year alongside the 23 other venues due to feature in the 2023 season.
“F1 can confirm that the Belgian Grand Prix is taking its place on the 2023 calendar, following an agreement to extend its joint partnership with the Spa-Francorchamps circuit,” Formula 1 said in a statement. It also assured that it will announce further details regarding the 2023 calendar in the near future.
However, the future of the Belgian Grand Prix remains uncertain even after this announcement. Negotiations with representatives of the Kyalami circuit and its return to F1 have not borne any fruit, at least for now. Nevertheless, the return of the South African circuit is expected for the 2024 season.
Unless there is a break with another track in the current calendar, it can be assumed that Formula 1 will bid farewell to the Spa circuit next season and will not return to this historic track in two years’ time.
