On Sunday 28 August, Formula 1 had its fourteenth race of the season on the schedule, which brought a lot of drama, especially in the opening laps. First Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton collided, then Nicholas Latifi shot down Valtteri Bottas. So let’s take another look at the start of the Belgian Grand Prix.
The 14th race of the season, the Belgian Grand Prix, was dominated by Max Verstappen in the Red Bull. The reigning world champion took the lead on lap 12 and, apart from the pit stops, never let his position slip away.
However, the starting grid positions on Sunday were heavily affected by penalties handed out to six drivers (Júki Cunoda started from the pits) due to component changes on their power units. Because of this, Verstappen started from 14th, Charles Leclerc from 15th, Esteban Ocon from 16th and Lando Norris from 17th.
It should be noted that the Belgian Grand Prix didn’t bring too many dramatic moments, apart from the opening few laps and especially the start of the race. So what happened after all five lights went out? You can see in the video below.
Lots of battles between each other, a collision between Alonso and Hamilton
However, this duel was then ruled a racing incident by the sports commissioners and no penalties were given to either driver, even though it was Hamilton who gave Les Combes virtually no room on the inside of the corner.
Hamilton subsequently shut down his monoplane and was unable to continue the race, with Alonso dropping several positions. But the fans witnessed yet another collision, between Latifi and Bottas.
The Canadian Williams driver went off the track at Turn 7 through his own fault and skidded on his return to the track. Latifi again failed to control his car and shot down Bottas in the Alfa Romeo.
Of course, yellow flags were immediately waved and the safety car had to take to the track. He pulled back into the pits at the end of lap four.
After the restart, the Dutchman Verstappen showed incredible pace to take the lead of the Belgian Grand Prix on lap 12 and dominate the 14th race of the season by class difference.
The next round is this Sunday and September 4 in Zandvoort, the Netherlands, where Verstappen will be running his home race. However, free practice sessions traditionally start from Friday, with the Red Bull driver winning the Dutch Grand Prix last season.
