What has been rumored for some time has officially become a reality. The 2020 MotoGP World Champion Joan Mir will defend the colours of Repsol Honda from next season. Together with Marc Márquez, he will try to return the factory Honda, one of the most successful brands in the history of the series, back to the top of both championships.

Ahead of the start of the San Marino Grand Prix, the fifteenth stop on the MotoGP calendar, Factory Honda has confirmed one of the biggest transfers of the season. Two-time world champion Joan Mir has signed a two-year deal with the team. This will see him attempt to prove that someone other than Marc Márquez can put in extraordinary performances on a Honda in the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Mir, like his current teammate Álex Rins, is switching from Suzuki, which will retire from MotoGP next year, to a Honda motorcycle.

The Spaniard was able to repeat the Japanese marque’s success of two decades ago. After Kenny Roberts Jr, he became the next world champion on a Suzuki motorcycle.

Before that, he won the Moto2 title in the 2017 season. He has a total of twelve wins and 33 podium finishes to his name. However, he has only triumphed once in the Royal Cubature, in his championship-winning 2020 season.

“I am very happy to announce my move to Repsol Honda. Now it’s time for me to return to racing as soon as possible after my injury and have a successful end of the season with Suzuki.

Despite signing with the factory Honda, Mir is not having a great season. He currently sits twelfth in the overall standings. He has failed to finish six of the last nine races.

In addition, after a horrific crash at the Austrian Grand Prix, he will not be taking part in the upcoming San Marino Grand Prix at the Misano circuit. He will be replaced this weekend by Kazuki Watanabe, a member of the Suzuki endurance section.
