But then came the title match, which was of more interest to Czech sports fans. Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova challenged the Belgian-Chinese duo Elise Mertens, Zhang Shuai on Sunday night.
The Moravian-Czech duo quickly took a 3:0 lead thanks to the Chinese taking the serve. They held their lead in the next game and, as the Belgian lost her serve at 5: 2, they were able to celebrate the opening set of the women’s doubles final after 33 minutes.
After the first six games of the second set, when there was no break, Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova made things difficult for a while. They did not lose a single point when Siniakova served and let their opponents lead 4::3.
However, the top seeds did not take advantage of the offered chance and Mertens did not catch her serve. And when Zhang Shuai lost her serve after a clean game on Krejcikova’s serve, the Czech joy could break out.
The final, which lasted one hour and eight minutes, brought our players their second Grand Slam victory of the year. At Wimbledon, Krejcikova and Siniakova repeated their triumph from 2018, their fifth joint victory at the “Big Four” tournaments.
The successful pair from the Czech Republic is having a controversial season. They won the Australian Open, but had to withdraw from Roland Garros due to Barbora Krejcikova’s coronavirus. She is still recovering from an elbow injury. Now, however, he can enjoy another stellar moment working with Katerina Siniakova.
