The Monaco Grand Prix was the seventh race of this season and offered very turbulent moments, especially in the opening stages of the race. After a long afternoon, Sergio Pérez took the win, while Mick Schumacher suffered a big accident.
Due to heavy rain, the race directorate postponed the start of the race for up to an hour, i.e. to the 16th hour. In addition, the start was not made in the classic way from fixed positions, the Monaco Grand Prix was started by the monoposts behind the safety car, obviously for safety reasons.
It should be noted, the opening laps of the Monaco Grand Prix were very hectic, after just a few laps Gasly, Vettel, Schumacher, Cunoda, Stroll and Latifi pitted for intermediate tyres. All the other drivers stayed on wet tyres for the time being.
But then the other drivers decided to go to their mechanics for the intermediate tyres, which are marked in green.
In addition, the track gradually dried out over the next few laps, and so at the end of the twenty-second lap the drivers went to get dry tyres, specifically the hardest compound.
This very dynamic course of the Monaco Grand Prix caused Charles Leclerc to drop from first place to fourth, also due to the Ferrari team’s poor communication once again, while Sergio Pérez moved to the front of the race.
Pérez, Sainz, Verstappen, Leclerc, Russell, Norris, Alonso, Hamilton, Ocon and Stroll – this is how the top ten points standings looked after twenty-three laps.
Kevin Magnussen in the Haas monopost retired on lap 26, probably due to technical problems.
And just one lap later, Mick Schumacher, Magnussen’s teammate, completely demolished his car. We wrote more about his crash in this article.
Schumacher’s Haas was thus cut in half due to the big crash, the son of the famous legend fortunately walked away on his own and shouldn’t have any serious injuries.
Yellow flags were immediately waved at the circuit, with race HQ subsequently calling the safety car to the track. However, after three laps of circling behind this safety car, the race directors resorted to red flags, thus halting the Monaco Grand Prix.
This, of course, was for safety reasons while clearing debris from Schumacher’s Haas, the tecpro barrier having been significantly damaged after the impact.
The Monaco Grand Prix was then restarted with the safety car in attendance, the standings almost unchanged from Schumacher’s, with Valtteri Bottas moving into the last points-scoring tenth place after Lance Stroll’s stop.
The race directorate switched to a time countdown after about three laps, due to the overall time limit, which is set at four hours for each Grand Prix.
Although the fans were able to watch four drivers battle it out for the win at the end of the race, Monaco has long been a very difficult place to overtake, so the order remained unchanged until the end of the race. Thus, the Monaco Grand Prix was won by the Mexican Pérez, who successfully held off Sainz, Verstappen and Leclerc, also fourth.
Pérez thus took his third victory in his F1 career! You can then see the final top ten points standings in the twitter post below.
“I am extremely happy to have won in Monaco. After winning the home race, this is the race you want to win. I’m very happy, I’m proud for my whole country. It was a tough fight at the end, but in the end I managed to keep Carlos behind me,” Pérez said in a post-race interview.
