Sergio Pérez has extended his contract with Red Bull! How long has the Mexican racer signed for and what did team boss Christian Horner say about him?
Monaco Grand Prix winner and Mexico’s best ever Formula 1 driver Sergio Pérez and Red Bull Racing have agreed to extend his current contract. Pérez will spend at least two more seasons with the Austrian team.
Monaco Grand Prix winner and Mexico’s best ever Formula 1 driver Sergio Pérez and Red Bull Racing have agreed to extend his current contract. Pérez will spend at least two more seasons with the Austrian team.
A contract extension until the end of the 2024 season – that’s exactly what Pérez has agreed with his current employer.
The thirty-two-year-old Mexican joined Red Bull in 2021 when he ousted Alexander Albon, who is currently driving for Williams.
Compared to Max Verstappen, who reached the podium eighteen times in the 2021 season, Pérez only appeared on the podium five times. While that number is very different, Pérez’s performances did pick up in the second half of last season and he eventually became a solid team mainstay.
And he’s proving that this year, too – Pérez won the Monaco Grand Prix in a thoroughly deserved fashion, beating Max Verstappen in all parts of the race weekend. What’s more, with 110 points, he’s third in the drivers’ championship and his form has been really good in the last few races in particular.
However, after retiring from the Bahrain Grand Prix, where a technical fault was to blame, Pérez has finished no worse than fourth in any race, after which he has already finished on the podium four times this season, including the seventh race of the season in Monaco.
And so, shortly after the Monaco Grand Prix, Red Bull boss Christian Horner announced that Pérez would sign not a one-year but a two-year contract extension.
“It’s been an incredible week for me. Winning the Monaco Grand Prix is every driver’s dream. I am extremely happy to be part of the team until 2024. I am proud to be part of the team, I feel at home here. Our relationship with Max is also very good and this is what motivates us to continue our work,” Pérez told the official website of the team.
“Checo has done an amazing job since he started. He has proven time and time again that he is not only a team player, but also a great driver and support for the team. This year he took another step and reduced the gap to Max again,” Horner added to Pérez’s words.
“His great pace, racing skills and fighting spirit were the decisive factors for us to extend his contract. We are happy that Checo will continue with us. We believe that we have the potential to achieve the greatest success in F1 with Max,” he concluded.
