Iga Swiatek is undoubtedly one of the biggest rising stars on the WTA circuit. The 20-year-old Polish tennis player is currently ranked fourth. However, she will improve her career best on Monday, which will put her ahead of Barbora Krejcikova.
In the current season, the 2020 French Open winner has a record of nineteen wins and only three losses. She has won the scalps of Simona Halep, Aryna Sabalenka and Anett Kontaveit, the world’s top players.
Her opponent on Sunday will be 26-year-old Maria Sakkari. She is currently ranked sixth in the WTA rankings, but like Swiatek, she is set to move on. If she wins, she would move up to second place.
It will be the second final for the Athens native in the 2022 calendar year. In the first one, coach Tom Hill’s charge was unable to keep up with Estonia’s Kontaveit, whom she lost to after sets of 7:5, 6:7 and 5:7.
Sakkari’s win was not helped by a 5:2 lead in the deciding set. It seems that mental resilience in tense situations is the biggest weakness of the Greek player, which she should work on in the future.
This will be the fifth time the two players will meet on the Indian Wells court. The more successful one so far is Sakkari, who has won on three occasions. She should also dominate at least one set on Sunday thanks to her better serve.
