Karolina Pliskova and Katerina Siniakova took the court during the morning New York time. Karolina held the reins tightly throughout the match against the American McNally, although she always allowed her opponent to get slightly closer. Her performance was definitely not 100%, but the 6:4, 6:3 win moves the Czech to the second round.
Siniakova confirmed her growing form in her match against Sevastova of Latvia, and despite having to fight off a set point in the first set tiebreak, she managed to win the shortened game to break the match in her favor. The former world number one in doubles won 7::6, 6::3 and in the second round she will face a tough opponent in the form of Maria Sakkari from Greece.
However, the 24th player in the world ranking scored 21 unforced errors in the first set against Sara Sorribes Torm of Spain and lost 2: 6. In the second set there were 27 errors, which were balanced by 23 winning shots, but it was not enough for Sorribes. After the 2::6, 6::7 result, Mucha’s Grand Slam season was over.
Kristyna Pliskova, on the other hand, did well during the night session. The qualifier did not give a chance to the Montenegrin Dana Kovinic and won 6:4 and 6:3 in one hour and 7 minutes.
Even faster than Pliskova, Petra Kvitova slipped into the second round. The Czech warrior was up against the Slovenian Polona Hercogova, who has not been doing so well lately. Kvitova with a 100% record on break points and 18 winners won 6::1 and 6::2. And in the second round, she’ll be going up against Kristyna Pliskova.
The tournament in New York continues today with second round matches in the lower part of the bracket.
