Karolina Pliskova’s best result so far was the third round at the Australian Open, where she finished on the racket of compatriot Karolina Muchova. Pliskova reached the same stage of the tournament in Stuttgart, where she fell to Ashleigh Barty.
However, that changed with the event in Rome. In the Italian capital, the 29-year-old Czech took on Anastasija Sevastova, Vera Zvonareva and Jelena Ostapenko.
In the semi-finals on Saturday, the Czech player took on Petra Marticova. Although Pliskova was clearly the better player in the opening set, the match had to be decided in the third set.
The native of Louny continued her performance from the first set and won 6:2. She will deservedly play the final on Sunday, where she will face the better of the pair Cori Gauff – Iga Swiatek.
With this result, Pliskova also ensured that she will appear among the elite ten in the upcoming edition of the rankings. She will even leapfrog Serena Williams and reach the eighth position.
There was also a shift in the rankings for 2021. Here, the former world number one has improved by sixteen places so far, bringing her significantly closer to participating in the Tournament of Champions. She is currently ranked eleventh.
