Memorable Moments is a special project by Ruiku that recalls the most iconic moments that have happened in football. Today we look back at Wayne Rooney’s iconic goal in the Manchester derby.
It was the 2010/11 season. Manchester United were about to enter their second year without Cristiano Ronaldo in the squad. Although he was not adequately replaced, the star Wayne Rooney exploded with goals immediately after his departure.
After the Portuguese transferred to Real Madrid, he took the shooting responsibility into his own hands and scored 33 competitive goals in his first year. This was expected to be the case the following season. But it didn’t quite happen.
In fact, the media had already begun to speculate before the season that Rooney was at odds with legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson. The situation even went as far as the England international asked for a transfer. Fortunately for the player and the club, the move did not materialise.
Rooney did not have a great season, but he scored a solid 16 competitive goals despite various problems and added 14 assists. Moreover, one of his goals has gone down in history forever.
The best goal in Premier League history?
The star Englishman’s phenomenal scissor-kick goal decided the derby win against Manchester City. The Red Devils won 2-1 and Rooney’s goal went viral. It’s been all over the world. To this day, it is still talked about as one of the best goals in Premier League history, if not the best.
It happened on 12 February 2011.
In addition, Manchester United went on to win the league title that season, their penultimate one to date. The last one was won two years later.
Wayne Rooney has since become coach. He ended his career as an undisputed legend. He is historically the top scorer for Manchester United and the England national team. Only Alan Shearer has scored more goals in Premier League history.
