In the eighth round we could witness the North London Derby, a big match between rivals Arsenal and Tottenham. The Canaries, as the leader of the table, welcomed on their field the team that was in the third place. Arsenal entered the match as the slight favourites.
Arsenal wanted to show off in front of the home fans and started the match very actively. They were rushing forward, combining and not letting their opponents do anything. Already in the second minute, the ball bounced off Lloris’ goal after a Martinelli shot.
After about a quarter of an hour of play, Xhaka had a shot from distance that just missed the target. Then, after a direct kick, the visitors also threatened when Richarlison ran onto a centre, but Ramsdale made a great save.
The first goal came in the 20th minute when Thomas Partey, who was played in by White, shot beautifully into the net from outside the box. A completely unobtrusive action resulted in a beautiful goal to make it 1: 0.
However, the home side enjoyed a good ten minutes. After some confusion in their own penalty area, a foul on Richarlison was whistled and a penalty was awarded. No-one could stand up to it but Harry Kane, who was lucky to convert with a shot into the middle of the net to equalise at 1-1. It was Kane’s 100th goal in the Premier League at the opposition’s ground.
Just before the first half whistle blew, Gabriel Jesus broke free beautifully from the left side, went past two opponents in the whitewash, but Lloris caught his shot. The first half ended 1-1, although Arsenal had the better of the play.
Arsenal started the second half more actively again and it paid off. Saka shot from an angle, but the easy shot was not covered by the goalkeeper and Gabriel Jesus came through for the deflected ball and shot into the open net to give the Canaries the lead back.
After an hour of play came a nasty tackle by Emerson, who brought down Martinelli. The referee didn’t hesitate and showed a red card. A small scuffle broke out, but it was resolved. Tottenham lost one player and that gave Arsenal a boost.
Five minutes after the red card, the home side struck for the third time. Martinelli beautifully headed the ball, which he passed to Granit Xhaka, who went into the defender’s box and then his shot beat the keeper.
Arsenal kept the result calm until the end of the game and came away with an important win that will keep them at the top of the table. They are now four points clear of their rivals. At the moment Arsenal have 21 points, Tottenham remain third with 17 points.
