Every series ends once and Real Madrid’s lasted a long time. Los Blancos won the first 9 games of the season, making club history. Only Osasuna managed to take the points from Real when Karim Benzema converted a penalty in a 1-1 draw.
The game against Osasuna started like most games after the national break. The Real Madrid players looked rather tired, they couldn’t get into the rhythm and push their opponent.
It was Osasuna who created three chances in the first half, but didn’t convert any of them. In the 42nd minute, Vinícius’ centre went into the net.
Real Madrid entered the second half in a very professorial manner. They lost the ball easily, a lot of inaccuracies led to chances for Osasuna, culminating in a goal. In the 50th minute, the experienced Kiko García extended his header with a centre which he flicked over the goalkeeper Lunin to equalise at 1:1.
From then on, Real Madrid took the initiative again and began to pressure their opponents. However, it didn’t take until the 78th minute for a chance to be created. Camaving’s pass behind the defence was handled by Benzema and when he wanted to finish at the small white space, he was tackled from behind by David García with both hands and the referee had no choice – penalty and red card.
The French goal scorer himself stood up to it and confirmed the rule that a fouled player should not go for a penalty. The penalty kick was apparently going to be taken in the middle, but Herrera stood his ground, so at the last moment Benzema tried to give his shot some punch and only hit the crossbar.
Two minutes later, he had a chance to make amends. He got to the ball in the whitewash and cleared it to the bar, but his joy was taken away by a millimetre offside.
Los Blancos set up a few more finishes but did not score the winning goal. Real Madrid thus faltered for the first time this season and lost points for a 1-1 draw with Osasuna.
