Will Cristiano Ronaldo head to MLS in January? The team he has long been linked with will soon have a vacancy
After the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t even make it off the bench for the Manchester derby, speculation has been rife about his future in a Red Devils jersey. Moreover, after Monday’s announcement, the door is opening to a certain MLS club with which Ronaldo has been linked by the media for years.
Gonzalo Higuaín announced at a press conference that he will retire from football after the MLS season. However, the season in the top American division does not replicate the European one, so Higuaín has only two months to go. After that, he will make room in his Inter Miami squad.
The place he will leave behind is far more important than a fan unfamiliar with the realities of MLS might think. Higuaín is a so-called Designated Player in Miami. That is, very simply put, a player who is outside of his club’s salary cap. Each club in MLS can register three such players. The other two Designated Player positions are occupied by Alejandro Pozuelo and Blaise Matuidi at Inter.
Although the future of neither of these two is certain either, we already know thanks to the announcement of Higuain that Inter Miami will have room for at least one new star in their lineup.
Therefore, one can’t help but speculate whether this reinforcement could be the one Cristiano Ronaldo is apparently unhappy with in Manchester. He has been linked with David Beckham’s club in the past and, at least marketing-wise, it would be a tempting proposition from all sides.
This idea is further fuelled by a Telegraph report that Ronaldo could be allowed to leave Manchester in January. That is, exactly after the end of the MLS season, when Higuaín will end his career.
