They said goodbye to the Champions League final as losers. Yet Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi sees participation in the final of the world’s most prestigious club competition as a success.
And to be sure, the Nerazzurri expected very few indeed in the Champions League final. Although the lot awarded Inter the easier side of the spider, the competition was indeed intense on the way to the top of this football edition.
Inter knocked out Porto, Benfica and city rival AC Milan on their way to the final. Needless to say, the Nerazzurri progressed from second place in the group behind first-placed Bayern.
It was in the fight to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League that they managed to beat Barcelona, who went from third place to the Europa League. All in all, the past year can be described as the rise of Italian football, even if neither team reached the coveted trophy.
Inter lost to Manchester City, Sevilla defeated AS Roma in the Europa League and Fiorentina fell short to West Ham. Citizens coach Pepe Guardiola also spoke about it.
The only goal of the final match was scored by Spanish midfielder Rodri in the 68th minute, Inter failed to take advantage of their chances. Manchester City thus won the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. In addition, they confirmed their dominance last season by scoring a treble.
We showed the world our strength
“We played a great game and we should be proud of that. We must not think about what if, we deserved better. I hugged my players one by one because they were special, just like our fans. They deserved a different result, but I hope they were happy to see how the team played today,” Inzaghi said in a post-match interview.
“We played against Manchester City with our own strength and we did very, very well. I think with this spirit, organisation and determination we will come back here (to the Champions League final – ed.) in the future,” the Inter coach added.
