Viktoria Plzeň’s first match in a tough Champions League group was not able to keep up with Barcelona and they lost 1:5. In the first half, there was hope for a good result.
Franck Kessié sent his team into the lead in the 13th minute, but after less than half an hour of play Pilsen could have taken a penalty, which the referee eventually called off after consulting VAR.
But then Robert Lewandowski added to the score. Viktoria also rejoiced, Jan Sýkora reduced it to 1:2 at the end of the half, but Lewandowski gave his side back a three-goal lead before the whistle.
He then scored a hat-trick in the 67th minute and Ferran Torres added a fifth goal a few minutes later. “We came up against a huge quality, but we counted on that. The players did a great job, they did their best, but it was not enough for such a great opponent.
Barcelona showed a very high level and it was an extremely difficult match for us,” said Michal Bílek at the press conference, where he also praised the three-goal canon.
“We have to acknowledge that he is a top player who has been making a name for himself at Bayern Munich and he continues to do so here. His choice of position, finishing and speed with the ball is phenomenal and he is rightly one of the best players in the world. Heis not easy to defend,” he added.
