Before the match nobody believed in them, yet Manchester United footballers beat Liverpool and got out of the last place in the table. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford scored to give them a 2-1 win.
In the third minute Marcus Rashford rushed at Alisson Becker, but Virgil van Dijk stopped him just before the end with a precise slide. Surprisingly, the Red Devils were the better side, with Anthony Elanga hitting the bar in the 10th minute with a great chance.
In the 17th minute, the stadium was celebrating. Jadon Sancho neatly broke free in the box and shot towards the near post, giving Alisson no chance. And the home side’s confident performance continued, with Trent Alexander-Arnold again stopping a breakaway Rashford with a slip three minutes later.
The last third of the first half belonged to Liverpool, but their attempts were successfully blocked by the home defenders. Then in the 41st, Bruno Fernandes almost scored his own goal from a corner kick, saved on the goal line by Lisandro Martinez.
Immediately after the change of sides, the Red Devils doubled their lead. Anthony Martial found Rashford, who converted his shot. Then Bruno tried his heel and Alisson had to do his best to catch his shot.
On the other end, Fabinho headed in, but David de Gea made the save. This was a rare opportunity, as Liverpool were otherwise unable to overcome the home side’s well-functioning defensive line.
In the 82nd minute, the visitors reduced the deficit. Mohamed Salah found a deflected ball and struck from his first big chance of the game.
Liverpool did not get the pressure they needed at the end and fell 1-2 at Old Trafford. Manchester United leapfrogged them in the table and picked up their first league points of the season.
