Viktoria Plzeň have a rematch in the third round of the Champions League. They defeated Sherif Tiraspol 2-1 in the opening match and will now challenge them at home. What did coach Michal Bílek say at the press conference before the match?
Viktoria Plzen have already secured the group stage of the Europa League. However, they are now playing Champions League qualification and if they succeed in the rematch with Sherif Tiraspol, they will play at least the Europa League.
Having won the first leg 2-1, their aim will be to go undefeated at home, which could be the basis for the tactics that helped Viktoria celebrate the title last season.
“The 2-1 result is great for us, we won on the opponent’s ground, which is very valuable, but it still doesn’t mean anything. We will enter the match as if it was 0:0. We don’t want to focus only on the defensive side, no way,” said coach Michal Bílek at the press conference.
So how will Viktoria play? The coach did not reveal all the cards, of course, but he did outline what could work for the Moldovan side, which leads the local league with 4 points after two rounds.
“We have to approach them quickly, not let them play and keep them as far away from our goal as possible. If we want to think about a good result and promotion, which is our goal, we have to repeat last week’s performance,” he added.
Therefore, if Viktoria do well in the game and qualify, they will be just one double-leg away from the Champions League group stage, which would be very noticeable indeed for the club’s devastated budget.
“With the games going in quick succession, the boys don’t even have time to think about what’s next. We always have to reorient ourselves very quickly. Now we have a huge chance to go further in the Champions League, but we are only halfway through and we have to repeat the performance from the first game,” explained the Czech coach.
