Less than one month to go until the Premier League kicks off. And Tottenham Hotspur finally want to succeed on some front and break the curse as the club still fails to win a valuable trophy. One of the most authoritative coaches – Antonio Conte – is set to help make that happen.
Conte joined the London club last November and has had the chance to get to know his team perfectly. He is now on a pre-season tour of South Korea with his charges, and he already has a few reinforcements at his disposal, brought in by the club.
The Italian strategist, who has managed Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan in the past, is infamous for his passion but also for his extreme demandingness. This is now also being felt by Spurs stars. And the hard drill was watched by around six thousand Korean football fans.
The conditions in Seoul weren’t the best on Monday. It was humid and the South Korean capital was plagued by high temperatures. However, even that didn’t make Conte back down from his demands.
After two hours of training, when the Spurs stars were engaged in classic exercises or simulations of match situations, all hell broke loose. The Italian coach wanted his charges to run 42 times across the pitch at maximum intensity with the possibility of a few short breaks.
Not to be said to be too strict, Conte gave a lighter version of this drill for the players who only recently joined the team. They only had to run across the pitch 30 times.
It’s probably no surprise that the players were dropping like flies. However, everyone had to finish their series. Among the first to go down was captain Harry Kane, who only joined the team on Saturday. He seemed to be ill, so he was given a towel to cool down so he could finish his set as soon as possible.
Son, one of Spurs’ biggest stars, also ended up on the floor. As soon as that happened, the chanting crowd sympathised with their compatriot and there was silence. The Koreans were afraid their idol would get hurt. Fortunately, it didn’t happen.
It’s worth noting that these runs were the third training session Tottenham players had in 24 hours.
