Liverpool supporters are worried, the others are laughing. Reds reinforcement Darwin Núñez is showing his new fans a bad light, mainly because of the missives that have gone viral on the internet.
Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez was supposed to be the Reds’ biggest signing this year. A cold-blooded striker, he was supposed to take the reins in scoring goals after the departure of Sadio Manê. Even though he has only had the opportunity to show his qualities in one game so far, criticism has been pouring in from Liverpool supporters.
The doubts of the fans about the qualities of the 23-year-old striker were already present when he joined the club. However, after the release of a video of the team’s training session, these negative responses have multiplied many times over. In the edited video that went viral, Núñez failed to hit the gear from close range.
He was then able to make amends in his debut match, when Liverpool challenged Manchester United in Thailand as part of their pre-season preparations. He took the field in the 62nd minute with the score 3-0 to the opponents. The Uruguayan had one clear-cut chance during his time on the pitch.
After Mohamed Salah’s shot from outside the box, the ball bounced off the bar and straight onto Núñez’s foot. However, from a promising position, he shot just over.
Liverpool’s new signing will have his work cut out to please some fans. The former Benfica striker has already been compared on social media to other failed reinforcements such as Andy Carroll, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku.
