One of the biggest cases of this summer is coming to a head. Robert Lewandowski will most likely actually leave Bayern Munich and join Barcelona. Although the Bavarian club has long refused to do so, in the end they have little choice. What made him change his mind?
Lewandowski will probably end up getting a transfer
Robert Lewandowski announced quite shortly after the end of last season that he would like to change clubs. He chose Barcelona as his next destination. But Bayern Munich were against it for a long time. And he would still prefer to be. After all, there were still statements from Bayern that the Polish goalkeeper would keep his contract.
But that seems unrealistic. According to foreign media, Bayern have accepted a fourth offer from Barcelona, which should bring in around 50 million euros. This means that Lewandowski will become the second most expensive player ever at over 32 years of age. The first is Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Transfermarkt server then teases out an interesting fact, according to which Lewandowski is one of the few players who is up to ten times more expensive at 33 than at 21.
What made Bayern change their decision?
Bayern have stood firm for a long time. To the point of antagonising, in part, its own fans, who didn’t much like the treatment of a player who had done so much for the club on and off the pitch. But in the end he changed his mind for one simple reason.
Let’s look for money behind everything. The Bavarian giant is eager to strengthen its defensive ranks and has been interested in Juventus stopper Matthijs De Ligt for some time. Hasan Salihamdzic, who is in charge of transfers, has even publicly travelled to Turin to negotiate with Juventus.
But the Italian big club remains adamant and has rejected several offers. For example, even one that was worth a total of €70 million. Juventus is demanding 90 million.
And that is why there has been a turnaround in the attempt to keep Lewandowski. Bayern’s supervisory board will only approve such an expensive arrival of the Dutch stopper on the condition that the club earns at least part of the money spent by selling the Polish star.
With De Ligt himself, Bayern have reportedly already agreed on a multi-year contract, with the player receiving €10 million per season.
