Former Manchester City and Barcelona striker Sergio Agüero returned to the pitch this week. He played against River Plate fans in Miami. Thus, we could see him in action for the first time since he announced his retirement from playing in December 2021 due to a heart condition.
The Argentine took part in an informal five-on-five training match with Miami affiliate River Plate after the club invited him to join in the fun with the fans.
Agüero even appeared in Barcelona colours with an eight on the back of his jersey and a nineteen on his shorts, which was his number at Camp Nou. As he has previously revealed, he believes in the possibility of returning to the pitch again for competitive matches.
In addition, he has been approached directly by the Miami club on several occasions. “Yesterday [Tuesday] I had the idea that I could play football again. Inter Miami called me, but I refused. In two years? We’ll see, ” Sergio Agüero said with enthusiasm .
“The doctors told me I had to spend five or six months out of the game, but I already want to train. I want to play recreationally. They invited me to Miami to play and I went. I want to send a message to the doctors,” continued Agüero, who is definitely enjoying the start of this month in Miami. In fact, he recently celebrated his 34th birthday with a lavish party.
We’ll have to wait and see if Agüero will return to playing professionally, but he’ll be going to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as part of Argentina’s coaching team. Earlier this year, he has already spoken to coach Lionel Scaloni and president Claudio Tapia. “I’m going to the World Cup in Qatar. We will have another meeting this week. I want to be there,” the Manchester City legend revealed.
Last October, the 34-year-old Argentine had breathing difficulties during a match against Deportivo Alaves. After 42 minutes, he had to be rushed straight to hospital. He has never been on the pitch since. The Argentine announced his retirement as a player during an emotional press conference at the Nou Camp in December, with his cardiologist confirming heart problems.
“He has a very small scar in the heart area, which is less than a millimetre, and that’s why he has short circuits and causes arrhythmias,” explained Argentine cardiologist Roberto Peidro. “He will live a completely normal life once we solve this problem.
But our advice is that he should not play a demanding sport that involves a high degree of mental and physical stress for several hours a day,” stressed Peidro, who has been caring for the former Manchester City and Barcelona striker since 2004.
