AS Roma, led by José Mourinho, secured direct qualification to the Europa League yesterday, and that could mean they could help Slovácko, who should move from the Conference League to the Europa League preliminary round with this win. This move up through the competitions has yet to be confirmed by UEFA.
José Mourinho and his charges cannot finish worse than sixth in Italy’s Serie A. This position was guaranteed by their 3-0 win over Torino. Sixth place in Italy means the team qualifies for the Europa League group stage.
Dutch side Feyenoord, who finished third in the league, guaranteed themselves a Europa League qualifying place. However, by reaching the final of the Conference League, they have also ensured that they will play in the preliminary round of that competition.
This opens the door to the Europa League for Slovácko, who won the Czech MOL Cup against Sparta. It would also be a preliminary round, but playing in the Conference and Europa League preliminary rounds already makes a difference.
The winner of the Czech Cup will automatically guarantee a second Conference League preliminary round under UEFA rules. The disqualification of the Russian teams has meant that they have moved straight into the third preliminary round. However, AS Roma and Feyenoord could be the next to move up to a better competition.
Slovácko is in fourth place in the league. The cup win capped off a successful season, which they would certainly like to build on next year. The Conference League should provide more financial opportunities, but it goes without saying that the Europa League offers even more such opportunities.
Now all that is left to do is wait for a statement from UEFA. Mathematically and statistically everything works out, but no official statement has been released.
