Erling Haaland has finally chosen his new team, he will play for Manchester City from the summer. Although his buyout clause is only 75 million, which is not much these days, the hidden fees will increase the total amount in a huge way.

When Haaland skyrocketed into world football at Salzburg, virtually the whole of Europe wanted him. However, he smartly chose Borussia Dortmund, which was the best option for his development. And the move worked out brilliantly, with 85 goals in 88 games, 23 assists and a place among the world’s best strikers.

So after 2 and a half years at Signal Iduna Park, it’s time for the next step. Two clubs, Real Madrid and Manchester City, are left in the final decision. Haaland himself was said to prefer a move to Spain, but the royal club is bringing Mbappé in the summer and along with Benzema and Vinicius, it would be difficult to fit Haaland into the attack.

On the other hand, at the Citizens, the 21-year-old striker’s place at the tip of the attack will be almost certain. Pep Guardiola has relied on playing without a striker, there is no pure nine in the squad, as Gabriel Jesus has started to perform better on the wing.

The rich sheiks in charge of the Citizens may not mind, but Haaland’s arrival is expensive. That may be why other clubs like Barcelona and Bayern, who were also interested but didn’t want to get into the financial race, pulled out.

Haaland’s transfer

75 million euros + 10 million euros (bonus) – Borussia Dortmund
40 million euros for 5 years – Erling Haaland’s salary
30 million euros – bonus for Haaland’s father
€50 million – bonus for Haaland’s agency

All in all, that’s a staggering €365 million. These figures are quoted by all the German and English newspapers and although they are not yet official, they are apparently very accurate.

For the transfer, Borussia will only pay Citizens €75 million plus €10 million in various bonuses. This is actually quite low considering that according to Transfermarkt Haaland’s market price is 150 million euros.

Most costly is Haaland’s salary in England. The Norwegian goalscorer should receive 40 million euros for each season and that’s still a sum without the famous bonuses that also make up a large part of the salary. If Haaland’s signing is confirmed, he would be among the 5 highest paid players in the world.

Another costly item is commissions. Haaland’s agency, which was represented by recently deceased agent Mino Raiola, gets the most. He negotiated a €50 million bonus for his firm. Another commission should go to Haaland’s father, former Citizens (2000-03) footballer Alf-Inge, for 30 million euros.

These sums are thus completely out of reach for the vast majority of teams, but not for Manchester City, owned by wealthy sheikhs from the Arab Emirates. Pep Guardiola has already pumped more than a billion euros worth of investment into his team over the last 6 seasons.
