The 40-goal stormer returns to the Premier League. Can record-breaking Mitrovic finally make it in the top flight?

The Championship champion returns to the Premier League once again. And this time in style. Aleksandar Mitrovic has broken the record for most goals scored in the second highest competition and taken Fulham back into the elite. Can he finally shine in the biggest stadiums?

Mitrovic has been in England since the 2015/16 season. The then 20-goal scorer for Anderlecht was brought to the Premier League by Newcastle. He scored 9 goals for the Magpies in his first year and made a fairly decent start, but he didn’t prevent relegation. Subsequently, however, he helped Newcastle to an immediate return to the elite with 10 points (4+6), where he didn’t really warm up.

In the 2017/18 season, he played only 6 games in the Premier League, scoring only once. So, in the winter, he left for the second league Fulham and finally showed his full potential in London. He netted 12 goals in 20 games and made a significant contribution to Fulham’s promotion to the Premier League.

He followed up his performances in the Championship in the top flight at least in numbers, netting 11 goals, but his play was not up to scratch and Fulham were relegated again. It was as if Mitrovic from the Premier League and the Championship were different people.

And it showed in the following seasons too. Mitrovic helped the Cottagers to an immediate return to the Premier League when he netted 26 goals. But he struggled again in the Premier League, scoring only three times in 27 games. So came another fall down the competition.

There, however, the Serbian striker is on a rampage. He’s in the form of his life, scoring a staggering 40 goals in 40 games. He broke the competition’s scoring record, held by Brentford’s Ivan Toney with 31 goals in the 2020/21 season. And he still has four games to go.

He’ll also get another opportunity to make a permanent name for himself in the Premier League. He certainly has the potential and quality to do so, Fulham look very strong this year and could finally stay in the top flight for more than one season.
