The opening quarter-final match of the Conference Europa League between Feyenoord and Slavia Prague offered a goal feast. The match ended in a 3:3 draw after the final drama and the match is wide open before the rematch in Eden. The famous “skkopek” (Feyenoord’s stadium) was pretty hot at times, but the football was excellent. How is the Czech football public reacting to the match?
In two words, the mood of the Czech football public could be summed up as both embarrassment and praise. Ondřej Kolář, Slavia’s goalkeeper, who is responsible for two goals scored, is facing criticism. In the beginning of the match he did not react to a shot by Sinisterra, which went really close to him.
He could hardly prevent the second goal, but his biggest mistake came in the 86th minute after a direct kick by Orkun Kökcü. Kolář went forward behind the wall as well and more or less got on the ball, but unfortunately he took a strange turn on his stomach during the tackle and it was a 3-2 goal from Feyenoord’s perspective.
However, the Slavs deserve a lot of praise for their overall performance. Feyenoord showed tremendous strength and possess an incredible individual quality of offensive players. Despite some unfortunate moments, the Seychellois were able to come back incredibly well and take a respectable 3:3 result from the hot ground.
For the unbiased viewer, it was a very action-packed spectacle, which was also relatively low on disjointedness. Moreover, both teams exuded a winning mentality and a desire to play football, both on and off the ball. The sprinting runs (even over long distances) of some players were really incredible, and all these superlatives were also decorated with proper emotions.
The public reaction
Both the professional public and fans of Czech football commented on the match. Together we will look at the reactions from both camps.
“A beautiful match! No pragmatic game, just football that entertained. Now I would like to return to Sunday and Sunday’s anti-football. This is exactly the difference why Slavia can play in Europe. Plzen will get a bye again from runner-up Albania. Even with a worse squad you can play football.”
“I don’t know what to compare this match to. If I wrote it down, I probably wouldn’t believe it myself. Unbelievable game situations. The rematch will be very difficult. For the league, let them do the whole thing. They’re really good. Just make sure Holes is okay. I’m afraid his body might just say STOP.”
